I thought that maybe I can share some tips of creating characters with fellow authors, since I struggled with that problem a long time ago and many of my friends gave me tips on how to create good characters! I compile them altogether, so please do tell me your opinions! c:
Here are some tips that might help (I hope so).
When creating a character, I suggest that you take a particular trait from your own personality. Like maybe if you are a dreamy, sarcastic person, etc. take one of the trait and emplify it in the character. When writing stories, remember that it's your character deciding the plot and flow of the story, not the flow of the story and plot controlling the character.
Ask yourself; "judging from my character's personality, will she really do [so] and [so]?"
Also, ask yourself;
"Will she really fall for him, depending on their personalities? Is her current actions really what her personality would allow?"
Next;
You should take note that your character shouldn't be overly perfect, such as making them sing well, dance well, know multiple languages flawlessly. Do not give her too many talents, one or two would be fine! >.<"
Uh... Lets see...
You should also makes sure that she screws up as well, because to make her realistic, she should have her fair share of mistake, cowardliness, meaness, and always makes sure that she receive the consequences to her actions fairly, instead of allowing her to get away with any wild acts she does when it reality, she wouldn't.
Always make sure that she doesn't have an overly convenient friend, such as one that agrees with everything she said! Make sure her and her friend might have conflicting thoughts once in a while, and make sure that she isn't always right. That is very important.
Be sure that not more than two guys are chasing her. I am sorry if I come of as rude, I really am, but I think that stories become unrealistic when more than two guys are chasing the girl... (I am really sorry if I offend anyone. >_<")
Next, always make sure that the character have sneaky thoughts or doubts. Make sure that she goofed up once in a while/fangirl/clumsy, it's more realistic to have thoughts like that instead of making a really cool person. Some "stupid" thoughts can be placed in as well, like for example when she met the 5sos boys, she could maybe think that they are cute instead of completely dismissing them/ overlooking them.
You can think about this as well;
Does my character have a too unique name, or a common name that is "misspelled"? [like changing Nadia into Nadya, for example]
Does my character have an odd tattoo or birthmark?
Is my character considered beautiful and even characters in my story comment on that, but she doesn't think so?
Does my character gets away with her mistake and did not suffer the consequences?
Is my character's clothing more unique and different than other characters?
Is my character almost always right but everyone always ignores her words and regret it in the end?
Is my character severely misunderstood and always scolded/yelled/hitted for something she didn't do and no one [NO ONE at all] cares?
Is my character always the one that always never had an embarrassing moment [like farting/ tripping] in front of other characters?
Is my character always looking good/cute/ glamorous even when she is crying and her eyes are puffy?
If you have more than three out of all this, I suggest you rescrap your character and restart because there might be a chance that your character is a Mary Sue . However, I might be wrong, and please don't take this too hard. I am really sorry if I sounded harsh in anyway, and in no way is this thread made to bash any fellow authors and nothing I said above is directed specifically to anyone. If there is something I said that might be really offending, please do tell me and I apologize sincerely if it is.
Other than that, please do tell me what you think! Am
I being too harsh here? Are this tips helpful? Should I make another thread regarding the main character's friend? >.<" I love to hear your opinions!
Thank you so much for taking time to read this and do have a nice day!
Love,
Evangel :)x
